EF holds International Conference highlighting the “New Normal” in Post-Crisis Era

The International Conference on the New Normal in the Post-Crisis Era was held at Academic 3 on 21st and 22nd May. It was co-organized by the Department of Economics and Finance (EF) and the Research Center for International Economics of City University of Hong Kong (RCIE of CityU), the Research Department of De Nederlandsche Bank, and the Journal of International Money and Finance. The conference was sponsored by Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation (孔慶熒及梁巧玲慈善基金) through the Hung Hing Ying Chair Professorship of International Economics.

Prof Arthur Ellis, Provost of CityU, kick-started the conference with welcoming remarks. 12 presentations of cutting edge research were made during the conference. Keynote speakers, Prof Stephen G. Cecchetti of Brandeis University and Prof Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas of University of California, Berkeley, presented their research papers Financial Stability and Monetary Policy and Riding the Global Financial Cycle: Capital Flows and Macro Prudential Policies, respectively, during the conference.

The event focused on the “New Normal” after the recent global financial crisis, a term carrying a multitude of meanings and reflecting the changes triggered by the crisis. The conference aimed to strike a balance between academic rigor and policy relevance, and offered alternative viewpoints on the multiple versions of the new normal after the crisis.

Over 35 local and overseas experts from leading research institutions and universities joined the conference. They included the Bank for International Settlements, Central Bank of Turkey, De Nederlandsche Bank, Brandeis University, University of Southern California, Rutgers University, University of Alberta, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, DIW Berlin, UC Berkeley, International Monetary Fund, Borsa Istanbul, Justus-Liebig-University Gießen, Universität Osnabrück, and Hitotsubashi University.
