2015 College of Business Congregation


City University of Hong Kong held its 2015 Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees at Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall from 10th to 20th November.
A total of 2,462 awards of Degrees were conferred to CB graduates from Undergraduate Programme, Taught Postgraduate Programme, MBA, EMBA and DBA Programme, PhD and MPhil Programme.

Prof Way Kuo, President, and Prof Arthur Ellis, Provost of CityU, presided over the ceremonies. Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College of Business, delivered an address to the guests, graduates, and their families, by sharing the five key “hiring attributes” Google is looking:

  1. You don’t know much, but you can learn
  2. You know when to shut the hell up
  3. You know when you’re beat
  4. You’re oddly proud of your mistakes
  5. You’re no expert

Prof Yan concluded his address with the following remarks:

So, I should like to encourage you to do two things. Let’s call them two types of reading. Yes, be curious. Build up your background knowledge by following your interest; read the web, newspapers, magazines, even books! But also be aware of the potential role of EQ – emotional intelligence – in your future work life (and life). Work on understanding context, understanding situations as they develop; “reading people” if you like.

I sincerely hope that you will enjoy a successful working life with your future colleagues, wherever and whoever they may be. That you will be able to understand them, and that you will enjoy fruitful working relationships with them. Such understanding may be the foundation of your success!

The 2014/2015 CityU Teaching Excellence Award was presented to Prof Muammer Ozer, Professor of the Department of Management, in the Congregation. Prof Ozer was highly recognised by the University for his outstanding teaching performance and contributions.

The ceremonies were closed by speeches delivered by the Graduate Representatives: Jiaqiu Wang, BBA (Honours) in Finance, Doris Wing Yan Yim, BBA (Honours) in Information Management, and Kwan Yee Wong, BBA (Honours) in Human Resources Management, respectively.
