CB students spread love and care to South Africa on social service voyage

A group of 32 undergraduate students from the College of Business have returned from a 4-week overseas community service project in South Africa, a joint project with SHAWCO from the University of Cape Town. The participants organised an exhibition at CityU held from 14th to 27th September, to share their reflection and insights in the trip.

The exhibition showcased the students' findings on developing countries, and their observations in the journey. During the programme, the students could study the history of South Africa and learn about how social enterprises operate there. They devoted themselves to engaging community through placements at various social enterprises, namely Mothers Unite, Rags 2 Riches, Mhani Gingi and ORT.

Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, visited the exhibition on 23rd September. He appreciated the students’ efforts in spreading inspiring and positive messages to fellow schoolmates, and encouraged them to embrace the world, to broaden their horizon.

Kayla So Ka-Yiu, BBA in Business Operations Management, one of the SHAWCO participants, recalled the journey memories, “Life affects life, and every little counts. I come to know more about the situation of the underprivileged in the third world which I have never imagined in the past. Perhaps I do not have the ability to change the world now, but I do hope to pay back to society one day.”

Student representatives from the programme also shared their joyful moments in the one-month journey, with "MFD Academy", a radio programme in the Metro Finance Digital Channel. To review the radio interview, please refer to the link.
