CB School Outreach Programme 2016/17

The College has a vision to outreach to community to help secondary school students prepare for university study. CB launched its first School Outreach Programme in 2016, and appointed student ambassadors to visit their alma maters. Apart from sharing their university life, the ambassadors also gave advice on programme selection, internship and exchange study, etc.

More than 100 ambassadors joined the School Outreach Programme from different disciplines. This programme offers them the opportunity to develop their public speaking and communication skills, through visiting the secondary schools they formerly attended. Up to now, the student ambassadors have visited 26 secondary schools and shared their learning experience with junior students on different occasions, including assembly, information session on tertiary institutions, lunch time sharing, sports day, graduation ceremony, school anniversary, Christmas Party, and dialogue session, etc.

“The School Outreach Programme in the College of Business is one of our key initiatives in developing our students’ skills to serve the community.  The student ambassadors are devoted to help students from their alma maters and demonstrated as role models of university students,” said Dr Weiquan Wang, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programmes).

The ambassadors have received trainings in presentation, communications and social skills. Renowned actress and TV host Ms Astrid Chan and media veteran Ms Akina Fong taught the students the skills to do public talks, and to present themselves professionally.  The ambassadors were also given trainings by the six Departments in the College, to understand the highlights of different CB programmes.

Some student ambassadors shared their meaningful experiences:

Tze-lok Chow, BBA Business Operations Management, was delighted that she could motivate a student she had met, “A student came to me after the presentation, and told me she needed some support in academic and career areas. I encouraged her to keep going, and I hoped she felt empowered.”

“I feel fulfilled to see students who are diligent and proactive to seek advice. They care about their own future and plan ahead,” said Tsz-ling Fung, who majors in BBA Business Analysis.

Kelly Leung Hoi-ting, BBA Business Analysis, said, “I gave my suggestions and told them my experiences. It was happy to meet my former teachers and chatted with the juniors as well as their parents. ” Her visit was also reported by her alma mater (link).

“The pre-visit trainings were useful. I could apply the skills when I had conversations with a group of students, and encouraged them to speak out their concerns”, said Hoi-chun Cheng , a Year 1 student in BBA Marketing.
