Undergraduate students crowned HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition 2017 champions

A team of four undergraduate students, Joyce Lau Tsz-ching, BBA Accountancy student, Ruby Sung Hei-lam and Kayley Wong Hang-ning, both BBA Marketing students, and Emerensia-Widjaja, BBA Finance, won the HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition 2017, organised by the Asia Case Research Center of the University of Hong Kong. Not only the team has won the Hong Kong winner title, but also garnered the Champion title in the final round held from 6th to 9th June, competing with 23 other business school teams from 22 countries across Asia Pacific region. The winning team was awarded a prize of US$10,000.

"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with four smart and dedicated students, and to witness their growth and improvement throughout the training and the competition", said the team's coach and trainer Dr Zachary Leung Ngai-hang, Assistant Professor of the Department of Management Sciences.

There were four rounds of competition held over three days. The students were given a real business case in each round. The team had 2.5 hours to prepare and analyze the case, and to propose a strategic plan to solve the problems, followed by a 20-minute presentation to a panel of judges.

Team member Ruby Sung shared her experience, "Our team constantly evaluated the approaches we used. After a long period of practice, we have developed a comprehensive framework that helped to identify key issues in cases.”

Kayley Wong said, "It was a great experience to work with my team. I learned how to be adaptable in any changing situations while under significant time pressure."

Another team member, Joyce Lau, described it as one of the best competition experiences she has ever had, "It was a challenging yet enjoyable experience. We had the chance to meet with elites from other business schools and to share ideas together. I would definitely recommend CityU students to join this competition.”

Emerensia felt that the case competition experience complemented her classroom learning, “I applied what I was taught in class, and used these concepts to better understand problems faced by a company, and to design a suitable strategy to address those issues.”
