Department of Economics and Finance summer learning programme in Laos

A group of 13 undergraduate students from the Department of Economics and Finance took a 4-week Summer Learning Programme in Laos, from 20th July to 16th August. The trip was sponsored by the EF Department and the Office of the Vice-President (Student Affairs) Summer learning Programmes 2016/17, and supported by the National University of Laos (NUOL).

Led by Dr Michael Wong, Associate Professor of the EF Department, who helped organise the learning programme with NUOL, the students were offered chances to look into the business environment of Laos and its prospects under China’s One-belt-one-road initiative. They also worked on various group projects with students of NUOL, on topics such as vocational training and developments, tourism, microfinancing, coffee plantation and export, and special economic zones in Laos.

Christopher Hoo-sum Hsieh, BBA Finance, said the visit was memorable and has offered a very good learning experience. “I feel like I have read hundreds of books about Laos. The experience itself indeed was better than reading books, because I have had the experience myself. The tour really broadened my horizons. I would highly recommend the trip to everyone!”
