US Consul General Mr Kurt Tong speaks about education in globalised world

The US Consul General in Hong Kong & Macau, Mr Kurt W. Tong, discussed the US education system, scientific and technological development, and the US’s position on globalisation with students at the first session of Dialogue Series with Consuls General.

The event was organised by the Office of Vice-President (Student Affairs) at CityU and held on 22nd November. The Dialogue Series invites various consuls general to share the culture and latest development of their respective countries, and provides opportunities for students to chat with diplomats.

In the first dialogue themed “Globalisation and Your Future”, Mr Tong said that Hong Kong has unique advantages among other global cities, because of its freedom, the rule of law and being a melting pot of world cultures. He encouraged young people to make use of the advantages of globalisation, and equip themselves to become global citizens.

He pointed out that globalisation has impacted different cultures and societies around the world, and higher education needs to prepare students well for these changes. He also recognised the positive effect of this Dialogue Series at CityU, on broadening students’ horizons.

Students from the BBA Global Business programme, has helped prepare different stalls and display boards in the CityU campus, to promote US culture and provide information about US geography and demography, prior to the event.

Global Business student, Chiara Rose Ann D’Cruz, said, “It was a very interactive and interesting talk by Mr Tong. He shared how individual Hong Kong was in its personality, business sense and culture, and it makes me feel how lucky we are to be a part of a city like this.”
