Orientation programme for 2nd EMBA (Chinese) cohort

An orientation for the 2015 cohort of EMBA (Chinese) programme was held from 16th – 19th April. Prof Wenyu Dou, Programme Director of EMBA (Chinese) and Associate Dean of the College, and Prof Frank Chen, Head of the Department of Management Science, jointly welcomed the cohort in the opening session.

15 new students, one from Vietnam and the rest from different provinces of mainland China, attended the four-day orientation. The programme included an introduction seminar, a campus tour, and in-class activities. It also provided teamwork activities to help students to get to know each other better, such as outward bound training and hiking in Sai Kung, and visits to Phoenix Satellite Television Company Limited, The LegCo Complex, ICAC Headquarters, and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank.

A welcoming dinner cum opening ceremony was held at the Senate Room of Academic 3. Prof Way Kou, President of CityU, accompanied by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, Prof Dou, and Dr John Leung, EMBA programme Director, gave a toast to all the students and guests, and wished the new cohort a fruitful learning experience. Each student was invited on stage to introduce themselves and shared their learning objectives.

Prof Dou highlighted the characteristics of the programme with three words – Global, Fresh, and Inspiring. “CityU is a globalized education institution, with our students, teaching faculty, and staff having varied experience coming from different parts of the world. Students can learn many things from people with different cultural backgrounds. The EMBA (Chinese) is also a new programme where everything starts from zero. It allows us to adopt innovative teaching methodologies and to integrate new elements into the curriculum. Our students’ diverse business backgrounds can also inspire and stimulate each other well.”

On the final day an innovative drama session was held in the School of Creative Media, facilitated by Instructor Ms Koala Yip Choi-fung. The students were invited to take role-play based on different business scenarios and presented their solutions by drama performance. It encouraged students to put aside their current roles in the company and to see complex business issues from multiple perspectives. Such mode of course delivery is quite common in Europe and the United States, but it is the first among all EMBA programmes offered in Hong Kong.
