CB students excel in Challenge Cup National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final

Ten teams from City University of Hong Kong have recently won top awards in the Challenge Cup National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final – Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2016. Among all CityU teams, four were from the College of Business and they won a Second Prize and three Third Prizes under the category of Entrepreneurship.

This year, the competition attracted over hundred project submissions. The winning teams under the Entrepreneurship category will represent Hong Kong to join the nationwide Chuang Qing Chun National Entrepreneurship Competition, which will be held at Sichuan, China in November this year.

One of the Third Prize winners Behold the Old (老 ‧ 吾老) is to provide our neighbourhood a new community-based employment solution.

Natalie Wong Hong-yiu of the Behold the Old project said, “We want to help senior citizens to look for part-time employment. They are experienced. It will be a waste to society if they cannot utilise their skills and knowledge after retirement. Ultimately, we want to build a platform allowing different age groups to contribute, creating a more harmonious society.”

The other project member, Nirav Sunil Jethani, told about his experience, “We came across many problems during the competition, particularly in terms of planning and financial; however, it’s happy to receive positive feedback from the judges about our proposal. I hope this project will turn into a real business and make Hong Kong a different society.”

The Second Prize winning project, Nanbor (左鄰右保) is a babysitter platform developed by a four-student team, with advice from Dr Yanto Chandra, Assistant Professor of the Department of Public Policy.

When asked what she has learned in the competition, Lisa Yeung Hoi-ying of the Nanbor project said, “I met many fellow students from different schools who are so passionate in turning their projects into real businesses. This inspired me very much.”

Other Third Prize projects Smart Pay (一拍掂) and Handyman (好幫手) are about using smartphone applications to enhance traditional mobile payment; and to provide home help, housekeeping and cleaning services, respectively.
