Professor Gregory Chow speaks on China’s economic reform


College of Business invited world-renowned economist Professor Gregory C. Chow to share his experience on China’s economic reform in 1980s. Professor Chow is the Class of 1913 Professor of Political Economy, Emeritus at Princeton University, and is also a member of the College International Advisory Board.

Professor Houmin Yan, Dean of the College of Business, welcomed and introduced Professor Chow by saying he was a pioneer in econometrics. He was an advisor to the Chinese Government and had played an important role in the Chinese economic reform.  It was a very invaluable experience for CB students to learn from an influential economist.

In this talk, Professor chow discussed the reasons of economic reform in China in the 1980s, and how he was invited to modernise the economic education system and the price system for the country. He shared his insights and recalled some behind-the-scene stories when he was serving as an advisor on economic reform in China. He also showed photos of precious moments at that time.

The audience also had a fruitful exchange with Professor Chow on topics including the recent China-US trade tensions, post-WTO period of China and property price prediction for the urban China etc.
