IS Smart Business Scholarships
In order to motivate students to work for their academic and professional excellence and to recognize their efforts and achievements, the Department of Information Systems has decided to establish a scholarship scheme terms as IS Smart Business Scholarships with her Non-UGC Reserves, commencing in 2016, for students of the Department of Information Systems. The major objective of having these scholarships is to recognize students’ outstanding performance in the academic and professional development during their studies in the Department. The following regulations shall apply as of 2017/18:
1. The Scholarships shall be known as “IS Smart Business Scholarships”.
2. Eligible applicants for the Scholarships shall be full-time undergraduate students who:
- have achieved great results in HKDSE and have just been admitted to the Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems (BDIS) through the HKDSE JUPAS route; or
- have registered their first major in one of undergraduate programmes[1] of the Department of Information Systems; and
- have achieved a good CGPA score or equivalent academic results deemed to be acceptable by the Department for this purpose.
3. The Scholarships are summarized in the following table.

Notes:
a) IS Smart Business Scholarships for Newly Admitted Students: The Scholarships will be awarded to students who have just been admitted to the Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems (BDIS) through the HKDSE JUPAS route. The Scholarships shall be awarded to eligible applicants who have achieved great results in HKDSE. In case the number of eligible candidates and the total value of awards exceeds the maximum amount, interviews will be done to select the final winners of the Scholarships.
b) IS Smart Business Scholarships for First Year Students (Diamond, Gold, Silver): The Scholarships will be awarded to students with minimum CGPA of 3.7 for Diamond, and minimum CGPA of 3.4 for Gold and Silver, at the end of Semester B of the academic year, their outstanding readiness as a professional, and their contributions to the Department of Information Systems. The actual amount for a Gold and Silver award is proportional to the CGPA of the applicants in a given academic year. This notwithstanding, is up to the Department of Information Systems to exercise its discretion in waiving the minimum CGPA for well-qualified applicants and setting a quota of awards for each major.
c) IS Smart Business Scholarships for Other Years Students (Gold, Silver, Bronze): The Scholarships will be awarded to students with minimum CGPA of 3.3 at the end of Semester B of the academic year, their outstanding readiness as a professional, and their contributions to the Department of Information Systems. The actual amount for a Gold, Silver, and Bronze award is proportional to the CGPA of the applicants in a given academic year. This notwithstanding, is up to the Department of Information Systems to exercise its discretion in waiving the minimum CGPA for well-qualified applicants and setting a quota of awards for each major.
d) The actual number of scholarships to be awarded in each academic year will be determined by the Department of Information Systems. The maximum amount of scholarships in a given academic year will not exceed HK$400,000 in total.
e) HKDSE non-weighted (4 Core Subjects + 2 Best Elective Subjects) JUPAS Score Calculation:
- Core and Elective Subjects Level-Score Conversion is: 5**=7, 5*=6, 5=5, 4=4, 3=3, 2=2, 1=1, Unclassified=0
- Other Languages Grade-Score Conversion is: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, Others=0
4. If an award recipient cannot complete his/her first major programme in the Department of Information Systems, the award should be fully refunded to the Department of Information Systems. If an award recipient decides to take leave of absence in particular semester(s), the award will be temporary suspended.
5. Award recipients are required to participate in the academic and professional development activities (e.g. workshop, seminar, forum, interview, alumni activities) as assigned by the Department of Information Systems.
6. Nominations from the Department of Information Systems shall reach the Student Development Services by the end of September (3a) and June (3b, 3c) respectively, and the awards shall be made as soon as possible.
7. The Department of Information Systems reserves the right to make the final decision on the nominations.
8. The award regulations are subject to annual revision. Confirmation will be sought from the Department of Information Systems before August each year on whether or not the Scholarships shall be continued for the following academic year.
Remarks :
With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Club when they are in employment after graduation. This term will be incorporated into all scholarship/ prize/ award/ bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.
