City Seminar explores Quest for Creative Research

Prof Hong Yan, Acting Dean of the College of Science and Engineering and Chair Professor of Computer Engineering, discussed The Quest for Creative Research 尋求創造性的研at Academic 3 on 30th October. The lecture was part of the City Seminar Series, organized by the College of Business.

Over 55 students, faculty members, and friends attended the event. Prof Yan shared with us theories and critical components of creativity developed by scholars in various fields. He illustrated the theories with a number of renowned creative works, by science and engineering and imaging technology researchers, and Nobel Prize winners.

There are two key components in creativity: originality and significance. Prof Yan explained that the objective of creative research is to recognise and solve significant problems, both theoretically and experimentally, namely via connecting clues, imagining potential causes, combining facts, and expanding cues. Although the results may not be perfect

“Creative work might involve learning from different fields, trying unpopular methods, not being afraid of resistance and setbacks, and persistence in achieving one’s goals,” Prof Yan said at the end of the session.
