CityU Employers’ Luncheon strengthen ties with industrial partners

Organised by the Career and Leadership Centre, Student Development Services, the CityU Employers’ Luncheon was hosted on 30th March and invited business partners from different industries to attend. The event aimed to strengthen connections with employers and to provide more career opportunities for CityU students.

Close to 300 senior management representatives from a variety of multinational corporations based in Hong Kong and abroad, as well as about 200 academics and students attended the event, which also featured over 70 student project exhibitions displaying students’ talents and achievements.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Council Chairman of CityU, emphasised the importance of building ties between the University and the business community, in order to enhance the competitiveness of CityU students, and to nurture them to become highly employable.

Dr Michael Chan Yue-kwong, Chairman of Café de Coral Holdings Limited, was the keynote speaker of the event. Dr Chan shared insights in management practices in his speech titled “Management for Millennials”.

Two students from the College of Business, Crystal Fu Ho-yeung, BBA Marketing, and Winnie Lee Wing-yee, BBA Marketing Information Management, asked Dr Chan tips for becoming a successful leader and how students can prepare themselves for the fast-changing society during the Q&A session.

Dr Chan shared that new employees were now expected to possess multiple skills and be able to perform several tasks simultaneously. He advised young people to maintain a global perspective, and be equipped with high emotional intelligence and resilience.

Crystal shared her experience as an intern in a fashion apparel company Diesel in last summer, “I worked as a buyer and was involved a lot in the operation process. It was fun and rewarding, and helped me understand more about the retail industry.” She is welcoming another exciting internship in this summer, to work on event management in a property and estate development firm.

Winnie also acquired an exceptional internship experience in South China Morning Post Young Post, “I was a summer cadet in SCMP and worked on news reporting and writing. The internship was a self-discovery process, and made me realise my career interests through different exposures at work.”

Dr Ron Kwok, Assistant Dean (Career Service) of the College of Business, explained the uniqueness of the College’s career support to CB students, “We have organised quite a number of career talks, workshops and recruitment activities which were particularly targeted to CB students. We also provide one-to-one career consultation to help students keep abreast of the business industry. We hope our students are best prepared for job interviews.”

The College’s Career Service aims to explore more avenues for students to get internship experiences and competitive career opportunities, “We are organising a theme-based career fair in September this year, which will address the needs of CB students and to strengthen ties between employers and our students.”  Dr Kwok said.
