IS postgraduate residential trip to Shenzhen


32 postgraduate students from the MSc Business Information Systems, MSc Information Systems Management and MSc Electronic Business and Knowledge Management programmes of the Department of Information Systems, together with the Business School of the University of Queensland (UQ Business School), completed a six-day residential trip in Shenzhen, China, from 3rd to 8th July.

The trip is a key component of the elective course IS6930 Management Consulting in Asia, which is a collaborative course offered in partnership with the UQ Business School. The course provides students with opportunity to participate in an on-site management consulting project for a company or organisation in Asia.

Guided the students throughout the consulting project were supervisors Dr Yulin Fang, Programme Leader of MSc Business Inofrmation Systems and Associate Professor of the Department of Information Systems, Mr Frank Lo, Instructor of the Department of Information Systems, and Dr Dongming Xu, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems of the UQ Business School.  

The students were divided into six teams, and studied the business operations of the company  Shenzhen Rongxin Financial Information Service Co., Ltd., a P2P financial operation platform established in 2013. The students conducted a thorough background research about P2P industry in China prior to the trip, and concentrated on the following six key areas regarding internet finance to analyse the company performance: 

  • Marketing and Customer Relationship Management  Strategies  
  • Mobile Internet Finance Application Design and Planning
  • Feasibility Research on P2P Products Innovation
  • Internet Finance Growth Strategy  
  • Core Competiveness Enhancement
  • Brand Strategy

During the on-site investigation, the students reviewed business development plans and interviewed the core management team, existing and potential customers to gain understanding on their consumer needs. The research findings were presented to the company management at the end of the study trip. The students received high compliments on their outstanding performance and valuable recommendations by the management in Rongxin.
