Distinguished researcher leads City Seminar on neutron scattering

Prof Xun-li Wang, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Physics and Materials Science, presented the topic of Social and Economic Impact of Neutron Scattering in City Seminar. The seminar was held on 12th January and attracted over 100 guests, alumni and students to attend the event.

Prof Wang introduced the project of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), a RMB3 billion investment focusing on neutron scattering located at the border of Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. The facility is now under construction and scheduled to generate the first beams at the end of this year. It is believed neutron scattering is one of the powerful tools for materials researchers and scientists, and can make substantial contributions in the areas of physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and materials engineering, etc.

Prof Wang explained the strategic plan of setting the CSNS in Dongguan, in the hope of promoting scientific research and technology, and to accelerate social and economic development in the region. It is believed that CSNS will become an international hub for materials research and create enormous benefits to the scientific community of Hong Kong.

Prof Wang dedicates himself to promoting science and materials research, neutron scattering in particular. Besides serving at CityU, he launched a biennial summer school to train promising students and young scientists on the use of neutron scattering. In 2015, he organized the first Gordon Research Conference on neutron scattering, focusing on disorder in materials.

About the City Seminar

The City Seminar 香港席明納 was initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with an aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand such topics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). The College will be inviting a number of professors and/or scholars to explore various topics during the series.
