City Seminar on role of nanotechnology in Made in China 2025 plan

Prof Jian Lu, Vice President (Research and Technology) of CityU and Dean of Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies, gave a talk titled “Made in China 2025: Integration of Nanotechnology in Advanced Mechanical Systems using Concurrent Engineering” on 12th October at City Seminar.

Prof Lu’s presentation featured how the application of structural nanomaterials on robotics system, new energy-saving and energy storage system was able to contribute to the sustainable development of mankind. He pointed out the feasibility of applying new nanomaterials on various advanced energy systems, such as wind power plant, next generation of nuclear plant and concentrated solar energy, and ocean thermal energy conversion. Lastly, Prof Lu reported the research and development process of supra-nano-dual-phase glass-crystal alloy film structure (<10nm) that recently published in Nature as a cover story, discuss its role in Made in China 2025.

Prof Lu’s primary research interest is advanced materials and its integration in mechanical and biomedical systems using the combination of experimental mechanics and mechanical simulation. He has also branched out into several other areas of interest including surface engineering, biomechanics, residual stresses, and mechanics of nanomaterials. He has published more than 350 SCI journal papers including papers in Nature (cover story), Science, Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Materials Today, Advanced Materials, PRL, Acta Materialia, and Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids. He received the French Knight of the National Order of Merit and French Knight of the National Order of Légion d’Honneur in 2006 & 2017 respectively. Both awards were nominated by the President of the Republic of France and awarded by the French Government. He was elected as the 1st Chinese-born French Fellow by the National Academy of Technologies of France among 300 Fellows in 2011.

About City Seminar

The City Seminar 香港席明納 was initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with an aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand suchtopics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). Professors and/or scholars are invited to explore a wide range of topics during the series.
