CityU MBA SHARP Forum: Kindness Matter (Series II) - Social Innovation

How could enterprises, themselves being fostered by society, create sustainable social impact while maintaining the benefits of their stakeholders? An inventive approach, known as Cross-sector Partnership (CSP), has been proposed and widely adopted in recent years. Such a social-oriented... partnership, which offers a new lens for exploring Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), leads to a co-working platform where individuals from partner organizations commit various resources and work cooperatively to address social issues. Two innovative social entrepreneurs are invited to explore the values and appeals of CSP by sharing their practices and experiences.more

Seminar: We Are on the Way: Analysis of On-Demand Ride-Hailing Systems

Recently, there has been a rapid rise of on-demand ride-hailing platforms, such as Uber and Didi, which allow passengers with smartphones to submit trip requests and match them to drivers based on their locations and drivers' availability. With the rapid rise, there have been questions about how... such a new matching mechanism will affect the efficiency of the transportation system, in particular, whether it will help reduce passenger's average waiting time compared to that under a traditional street hailing system. In this paper, we address this question by building a stylized model of a circular road and comparing the average waiting times of passengers under various matching mechanisms. After identifying key tradeoffs between different mechanisms, we find that surprisingly, the on-demand matching mechanism could result in higher or lower efficiency than the traditional street hailing mechanism, depending on the parameters of the system. To overcome the disadvantage of both systems, we further propose adding response caps to the on-demand hailing mechanism, and develop a heuristic method to calculate a near-optimal cap. We also test our model using more complex road networks and show that our key observations still exist.more

Seminar: Operational Disruptions and The Value of Credible Control Systems

Operational disruptions can impact a firm's risk, which manifests in a host of operational issues, including a higher holding cost for inventory, a higher financing cost for capacity expansion, and a higher perception of the firm's risk among its supply chain partners. While disruptions have been... studied extensively in the operations management literature, the emphasis has been on mitigating the deleterious impact on the firm's production potential rather than its risk. We empirically examine whether firms can meaningfully reduce the impact on their risk by credibly attesting to having robust internal control systems. Using a natural experiment in our data, we show that firms with such credible control systems experience a materially smaller increase in their risk and a smaller decrease in their market value in the aftermath of an operational disruption compared to firms without such systems. The beneficial impact on the firm's risk can persist for two years after the disruption. We provide evidence that such benefits are associated with a lower level of information asymmetry between the firm and its investors. Our analysis is in the context of stock market reactions to disruptions because stock markets provide rich archival data for analyzing decisions and risk under information asymmetry. We argue, however, that our insights apply more generally to other firm constituents in the presence of information asymmetry, including suppliers, employees, partners, customers and regulators.more

Characterize Operations in Air Transportation Systems Based on Large-scale Operational Data

Many operations in air transportation systems, such as flying an airplane or air traffic management, are performed by human following specific procedures. Standards of these operations are multifaceted depending on pilot, air traffic controller, weather, aircraft systems, or traffic conditions;... there is a lack of agreeable terms to describe what is "deficient", though the definition of "safe" or "failure" is clear. However, to improve future operations, it is important to understand and characterize these normal operations. With the technological environment advances in air transportation systems, massive amounts of data are generated from multiple sources as operations occur. The development of analytic tools utilizing these data can significantly contribute to improve future operations. Deficiencies in operations can be identified by mining a large amount of operational data in post-event analysis; actual system behavior can be characterized for real time decision support. In this talk, I will present several ongoing projects towards characterizing operations in air transportation systems based on large-scale operational data. The preliminary results show that the data-driven approach is effective to identify the actual behavior and complexity of pilot operations and air traffic networks, which are not captured by existing methods.more
