Network Thinking: 10 ways to see how the world is connected


Titled Network Thinking: 10 ways to see how the world is connectedProf Jonathan Zhu, Professor of the Department of Media and Communication, gave an inspiring speech about human ties and interaction in social network in the College’s City Seminar held on 3rd November.

In the seminar, Prof Zhu introduced ten pair of competing ties, including direct or indirect ties, one-way or two-way ties, bilateral or multilateral, manifested or hidden, strong or weak, positive or negative, unweighted or weighted, assortative or dis-assortative ties, and static or evolving ties, to illustrate the concept of network thinking and reveal the complexity of human connections.

Prof Jonathan Zhu teaches communication theory, social network analysis, and computational social science, and manages an interdisciplinary Web Mining Lab. His recent studies focus on network sampling, network controllability, information cascading, and other issues of social networks. His work has been widely published in journals across disciplines such as in communication, computer science, physics, and medical informatics.

About City Seminar 
The City Seminar 香港席明納 was initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with an aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand such topics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). Renowned scholars and industrial practitioners will be invited to share various topics at the Seminar.
