Open forum in Shenzhen on financial evolution

The open forum entitled “The development of the Greater Bay Area and financial evolution” (粵港澳大灣區產業發展戰略及金融變革論壇)under the Intelligence Gathering Series (城商智匯講堂) was held in Shenzhen on 2nd December. The forum was jointly organized by the Centre for Advanced Business Research and Executive Education (Shenzhen), and the EMBA (Chinese) programme from the College of Business.

Prof Chenting Su, Chair Professor of the Department of Marketing, and Director of the DBA (Chinese) programme, gave a presentation on the development plan of the “Greater Bay Area”, hoping to give the audience a better understanding about this project. He also highlighted that the development plan in the area is innovation-oriented, and will reinforce companies to work on areas such as technology and innovation. It will also offer better opportunities for startups, and turn the area into an integrated economic and business hub.

In the second part, Dr Zhong Zhang, Assistant Professor of the Department of Economics and Finance, brought an interesting topic on “Blockchain technology, cryptocurrency and Bitcoin”Dr Zhang first introduced the concept of decentralized currency, and the reasons of the continuing prevalence of Bitcoin. He explained the potential benefits of achieving more efficient transactions and payments using crypto-currencies, but also emphasized the risks of investing in virtual currencies, and potential scams on different trading platforms.
