In this disrupting labor market, employers are looking for candidates who can integrate soft skills, such as leadership, creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, interpersonal, problem solving with their academic knowledge.

Around thirty students from the College of Business (CB) and the university joined the Career Bootcamp held on 8 July and 29 August 2023 organized by CB’s Business Career Development to get hands-on tips to strategize their summer and graduate job applications. The Career Bootcamp was designed for students who aspire to take a lead in their career development and stay ahead of the curve in a rapidly changing employment market. It aimed to help students identify their career aspirations, market-demanding career skills, and to elevate competitiveness in a disruptive job market. It also helped to work on students’ leadership, team collaboration, group problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, and business acumen through pitching / case simulations and industry leader sharing and networking.

CB student Logan Wong Hei-lung, BBA Finance Year 3, said: “Participating in this programme gave me a macro view of the changing employment market landscape and help me understand the impact of technology, globalization, and other global trends on the job market. In addition, the programme provided practical guidance on how to make effective career decisions that align with my interests, job skills, and market needs. I learnt how to develop hands-on career skills through case simulations, experiential learning activities and prepare myself to be competitive in a disruptive job market. The skills and knowledge gained from this programme will be invaluable for me, as I am seeking to stand out in a competitive job market. Whether I am interested in pursuing a career in a traditional industry or a new emerging field, the programme helped me to develop a diverse skill set, build a strong personal brand, and stay up-to-date with industry trends and innovations.”

“CityU bootcamp offers opportunities to network with industry professionals, which can be a valuable asset in finding job opportunities and advancing my career,” said Tommy Yip Kin-long, BBA Accounting Year 1.

The 2-day Career Bootcamp was instructed by Dr Stephanie Fan, Adjunct Professor of CB and also Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of an asset management company, followed by the industry sharing sessions by Christina Wong, former Managing Director and Head of Sales Management in BNP Paribas’ Wealth Management; and CB alumnus, Matthew Chan, Investment Manager, HSBC Life. The Career Bootcamp was also co-hosted by JSK Elite and funded by the Career and Leadership Fund.
