Students interested in pursuing a career in finance often face the challenge of lacking practical knowledge, awareness and necessary tools to pursue their chosen path. This full-day simulation-based workshop provided students with invaluable experience across various roles in finance.

More than 80 CB students joined the full-day Finance in Practice Simulations workshop which was run twice on 28 October 2023 and 3 February 2024 organised by Business Career Development. These simulations provided students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Asset Management, and Sales & Trading simulations, as well as taking on a role of a junior investment analyst and diving into the Activision & Microsoft M&A deal. Additionally, they had the chance to become part of the Equity Capital Market team to help clients in developing their company IPO roadshow pitch deck. The workshops allowed students to gain a practical understanding of what it is like to work on a trading floor and experience the core duties of the Global Capital Market team.

Sannie Cheung, a CB student majoring in BBA Global Operations Management, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the Finance in Practice Workshop. The first simulation enhanced my understanding of buy-side and sell-side dynamics, and the trading simulation was very insightful. The second simulation provided valuable insights into IPOs, and the opportunity to simulate an IPO presentation was a great learning experience. Thank you, CB, for providing such a great opportunity!”

“This workshop prompted me to reflect on my future career path, particularly in the front office of Investment Banking, where analysts tackle challenging tasks in M&A and IPO,” said Sophia Lam, a BBA Global Business Systems Management student. “Understanding the DCF (Discounted Cash Flow) model is crucial in this field, as it enables analysts to determine a company's intrinsic value by projecting cash flows and applying discount rates. Gaining fluency in these skills will set me up for a successful career in front-office Investment Banking,”

Frank Wong, a BBA Finance student, said, “The ‘Finance in Practice’ training was an absolute game-changer, immersing me in the captivating realms of Asset Management and Investment Bank Divisions. The impact of the workshop has been profound, and I am grateful for the invaluable experiences and knowledge gained.”

The Finance in Practice Simulations was co-hosted by AmplifyME, a financial institution based in London, and funded by the College of Business. Students who completed the full-day workshop were awarded a Level 4 Diploma accredited by the London Institute of Banking and Finance.
