CB students explore urban innovation and sustainability in Singapore
The College of Business partnered with Singapore Management University (SMU) for its Challenge Tour to Singapore, themed "Driving Innovation for Sustainability: Singapore’s Challenge," from 27 May to 3 June 2025. This tour aimed to provide CB students with a unique opportunity to explore innovative urban planning and development strategies.
The programme kicked off with a welcome session at SMU Connexion, where participants learned about Singapore’s sustainability movement and advanced water management techniques. Students engaged in interactive workshops focused on sustainability and urban design.

A group of 30 CB students join the eight-day Singapore tour to explore innovative urban planning and development strategies.
A key highlight of the tour was a guest lecture on the digital transformation of port operations, followed by a sea exploration to observe port operations firsthand. Additionally, students visited Dignity Kitchen, a social enterprise offering culinary training for individuals with disabilities. BBA Marketing student Alina Andrä noted the founder’s emphasis on restoring dignity through food, which inspired her commitment to social entrepreneurship. She said, “The people working there, many of whom have physical or intellectual disabilities, were treated with great respect. This moment reminded me why I care so much about social entrepreneurship, and I left that visit feeling inspired and grounded.”
During the weekend, students explored iconic Singaporean landmarks, gathering insights to apply in Hong Kong or other cities. The tour concluded with group presentations that impressed faculty from both CityUHK and SMU. One of the judges, Professor Siew-ning Kan from SMU, remarked, "I’m very impressed with the group presentations; students were able to think from many aspects regarding the themes they were assigned." Professor Choon-ling Sia, Associate Dean (Research and Faculty) of the CityUHK College of Business, commended the quality of their work.
CB students showcased innovative urban solutions and also built meaningful connections. Charles Liang Chun-cheung, a BBA Accountancy student and recipient of the Best Speaker Award, mentioned he would recommend the trip to others next year. The College of Business aims to support students in becoming future leaders through experiences like these study tours, fostering their ability to address real-world challenges.
