College of Business Commencement Ceremony 2025
The CityUHK College of Business celebrated its Commencement and Award Giving Ceremony on 14 June, honouring the graduation of over 3,400 CB students.
In his opening address, Dean Professor Stephen Shum warmly congratulated the graduating students for their achievements, noting the challenges and pressures they faced in navigating a rapidly changing environment during their academic studies, as well as the resilience required to adapt to both local and global uncertainties.
“University graduation is a significant accomplishment under any circumstances in any country. Your achievement today is particularly special, as it comes against a challenging backdrop for much of your undergraduate career. So, well done on reaching this milestone!”
Dean Shum emphasised the importance of innovation and shared valuable insights on leveraging artificial intelligence in their future career. He advised graduates to:
- Stay Agile: Embrace new technologies and be willing to learn continuously.
- Double Down on Human Skills: Focus on critical thinking, creativity, and communication as enduring competitive advantages.
- Do the Right Thing: Prioritise ethics in AI deployment and engage in responsible innovation.
- Talk and Collaborate Across Disciplines: Build bridges between technical teams and business strategy.
- Take the Initiative: Shape the future of AI rather than let it shape you.

Dean Professor Stephen Shum addresses the 2025 College of Business Commencement.
“You now possess the foundational business knowledge, the analytical skills, and, hopefully, the ethical compass to work with AI. I hope that you can see it as a tool to help you solve bigger problems, create greater value, and build a more prosperous and equitable world,” he remarked.
Student speakers Gooby Tse Tse-wong, representing undergraduates, and Christopher Newman, representing postgraduate students, also addressed the audience. Gooby highlighted how his four years at university transformed him, sharing stories of studying abroad, battles fought alongside his business peers, and friendships formed around the world. Christopher expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the students' success and encouraged graduates to give back to their communities, uplifting the less fortunate and ultimately bettering their local towns and country.
