Xin is a professor in the Department of Information Systems at the City University of Hong Kong.
- In the 2000s, he studied graph kernel and network-based data mining, which is applied to text classification, recommendation, fraud detection, and bioinformatics.
- In the 2010s, he started to employ machine learning in empirical analysis. Leveraging text mining, image mining, and graph mining techniques, he studied the impact of reviews and pictures on e-commerce, the impact of collaboration graphs on OSS, and the impact of news on the stock market.
- In the 2020s, his interest expands to more topics on technology and the digital economy. He studies the health, efficiency, fairness, and inclusiveness implications of AI and platforms.
He has 110+ publications, including 60+ journal papers, which are on MISQ, ISR, JMIS, INFORMS JOC, DSS, I&M, JASIST, IJEC, various IEEE/ACM Transactions, and Nature Nanotechnology, among others. He is a senior member of IEEE and ACM, and a member of INFORMS and AIS.
