Biography

Yulin Fang earned his PhD at Richard Ivey School of Business, The University of Western Ontario in Canada. His current research interests include knowledge and innovation management, information systems and open platform strategy, and e-commerce/social media. He was granted College Research Excellence Award in 2014 and College Teaching Excellence Award in 2016. He was a University Teaching Excellence Award finalist in 2009-2011 and one of the President's Award recipients in 2016.

Yulin has been active in contributing to the global research community. He is a Senior Editor for Information Systems Research and Information Systems Journal, and a Co-Editor-in-Chief at Information Technology & People. He was an Associate Editor for several leading journals, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Information Systems Journal, and Information & Management. He was awarded the Associate Editor of the Year (2015) for his editorial services to Information Systems Research. He has also regularly served as a track co-chair for International Conference on Information Systems and Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems since 2013.

Yulin has published 60 research articles in renowned management and information systems journals, including MIS Quarterly (MISQ), Information Systems Research (ISR), Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS), Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS), Strategic Management Journal (SMJ), Journal of Management Studies (JMS), Organizational Research Methods (ORM), Journal of Operations Management (JOM), Journal of Organizational Behavior (JOB) among others. He has won many best paper awards. For example, his research on open source software communities won the 2009 Senior Scholars Best IS Publication Award by the Association for Information Systems (AIS). His research on e-commerce was recognized as one of the most highly cited and highly influential papers in 2014 by Emerald Publishing. His research on intra/inter-firm knowledge transfer in multinational enterprises was a finalist for the Samsung Best Paper Award and the Carolyn Dexter Award at the Academy of Management (AOM) in 2010. His research on virtual teams was the Best Paper Runner-Up at Organizational Communication and Information Division at AOM 2016.

Yulin has taught courses such as Introduction to MIS and Business Research Methods at MBA, EMBA and DBA levels. He has collaborated with University of Queensland to supervise many cross-cultural student consultant teams at the master level, who successfully delivered management/information systems consulting projects to fast-growing firms in emerging, Internet-empowered industries.

Yulin practiced as a management consultant with Accenture and Arthur Anderson before pursuing a PhD. He was specialized in (e-)business strategy, marketing strategy and IT strategic planning. He also provided independent consultancy services on knowledge/Innovation management for Canadian Government and Alcatel Global.

Yulin is a professional case writer, having developed business cases for digitally-savvy corporations operating in Asia, such as Volkswagen, Cathay Pacific, Ctrip, Uber, Alcatel China, Google China, Tencent, HK Stock Exchange, and HK Airport. His cases "Keda's SAP Implementation" and "Google in China (B)" were best sellers at Ivey Business School Publishing and European Case Clearing House, respectively. His most recent cases on Cathay Pacific's IT outsourcing journey and Volkswagen's AI vision were published in 2019.
